History of Hope-Giving FIRST
Dean Kamen founded FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) in 1989 to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. In addition, FIRST hopes to motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in STEM fields. Read the vision and mission of FIRST here. In 1992, 28 FIRST Robotic Competition teams met in a high-school gym for the first FIRST event. Notably, now over 460,000 students in over 52,000 teams compete.
